True talk, VA craft brewers aren’t much for stouts. Oh, they’ll do them as seasonal offerings and brewhouse specials, but fewer breweries than you'd think offer them among their year-round core beers. Champion is one of them. The Hogwaller Scramble is Champion’s Imperial Oatmeal Stout brewed with Gearhart's chocolate and Brazil Primavera coffee from Shenadoah Joe's. Look for a careful blend of dark chocolate and sweet, roasted malts with notes of coffee lingering around the edge. For a beer with such a bombastic package and backstory (It's an homage to the pickup truck keg run from Belmont brewery to taproom.), it's a surprisingly smooth ride.
