Oud Bruin
Belgium’s Van Steenberge Brewery straddles the Atlantic with this peerless oud bruin. Situated in the village of Ertvelde, north of Ghent, the Van Steenberge-to-be’s first beer, in 1784, was an oud bruin (a barrel-aged sour brown ale). Hundreds of years later, Tom Peters — Belgian beer advocate and owner of Philly’s big Belgian bottle shop, Monk’s Café — discovered the oud bruin’s descendent and became a big fan. He fell in love with its mild acidity mixed with a pomegranate-like malt bill for a captivating sour taste. After much lobbying, Peters convinced Paul Van Steenberge to let Peters sell it in his shop, and the rest is beerstory.
