Wine of the Week 10/06/20
Chateau Lastours Simone Descamps
Regularly $20.99/On Sale for $13.96!
The grounds of Château Lastours, in addition to a restaurant and a racetrack, used to contain a center for the intellectually-disabled. A local woman named Descamps used to volunteer her time there and, after her death, bequeathed her estate towards continuing the work. Their premiere cuvée is now named in her honor.
Lastours is located in the heart of the Corbières massif, a mountain range that is a foothill fo the Pyrenées. Nevertheless, the vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate, and it is prime grape-growing land.
The Cuvée is a blend of the best of the Syrah, Carignan, and Grenache crops, and sees more time in barrel than any of the other wines to give it time to mature and mellow. Impressive upon opening, this wine will continue to improve as it gets some air. Expect more it to evolve as you work your way through the bottle.
Unfortunately, this wine is leaving the Virginia market, so now is the time to snag some bottles to lay down for awhile, particularly at this price!
Coincidentally, October 4th-10th is Mental Illness Awareness Week, and we’d like to encourage everyone to check in with anyone you know who may be having an even harder time with the relentless stressors of 2020.
