Spiced Doppelbock Style Lager
Well, it had to happen. People in “the brewing know” keep saying that the core of brewing is science (specifically chemistry). It was only a matter of time before an actual licensed scientist unpacked his or her official science skills and packed up some beer cases. In this case, microbiologist Dr. John Andorfer took a liking to craft brewing and co-founded a brewery and brewpub in Danville, VA. Ensconced in a renovated tobacco warehouse, Ballad has been developing beers since 2017.
We’ve never been disappointed by a Ballad beer that we have tasted, but their Lebkuchen Doppelbock is the first brew to really knock us back. The Lebkuchen (or “Gingerbread”) Doppelbock is such a great idea, we’re surprised we haven’t run into it before now. Take a solid Doppelbock style lager and add “German holiday cookie spices” to it. You get the bready sweetness of the Doppelbock with just a tinge of spice at that finish capping off the sweetness before it becomes cloying. It’s quite a successful ride (unlike the local train wreck enshrined in Country music that inspired the brewery’s name).
