Beer of the Week! 10/19/21
Commonwealth Copacabana
Regularly $18.99 / Now on Sale for $17.96
Fruited Hazy Double IPA
For those people who pine for the times when “beer tasted like beer,” this brew is not for you. For the rest of us, strap on in. Virginia Beach’s Commonwealth Brewing Company is pulling out the stops for this fruited Double IPA.
The Copacabana starts its life as a casual conversation between Barry Manilow and his longtime collaborator Bruce Sussman while the two stand in the lobby of the Copacabana Hotel in Rio de Janerio … oh, wait! Wrong Copacabana! Sorry!
The Copacabana starts its life as a regular juicy, unfiltered Double IPA, then, somewhere along the way, things go a little bananas (a little bananas and strawberries and — well … you’ll see). Commonwealth adds strawberries, raspberries, and bananas to this brew, but that’s not all. Oh, no! They also add in Mexican Vanilla Beans and lactose. The lactose is important, because it is a sugar that beer yeast cannot metabolize. So it adds sweetness to your beer and not alcohol.
As a result, this beer is a fruit bomb! The berries and bananas are right up front and swim around even as the hops give a citrus tingle to the finish. It’s delicious but more like a cocktail than a beer. In fact, we know that not many of us are entertaining these days, but this brew is a great party beer. It’s just the thing for when you want people to have something that’s fun and different. (We like the idea of pouring it out like punch!) It’s also the perfect beer for sharing because it’s so rich and filling, you might have more fun splitting the 16oz can with someone than downing the whole thing alone. Try it with a meaty pizza - or a pizza with ham and pineapple. (Don’t attack us. It’s a thing.)
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell said that two can have a party all night!)
One Family My Dog Needs a Mom
Regularly $11.99 / Now on Sale for $10.96
Harvest Ale
One Family Brewing Company is up in Lovettsville, VA — so very far north, right near Harper’s Ferry. Owner David Keuhner has just completed building a farm brewery with an onsite memorial to Gold Star families.
The My Dog Needs a Mom is the first beer they brewed — a Harvest Ale for the fall. Look for an accessible, easy-drinking ale that comes across as a Pale Ale with a smooth, slightly roasty, malt backbone. At only 4.5 % ABV, it’s the cure for your, “I Want Taste But Not a Big Buzz” Blues.
