Crystal Coast Brewing Company sits on North Carolina’s Emerald Isle, a little slip of land right off of Carolina’s coast, about 180 miles south of Norfolk. They are dedicated to making their beer with as many local ingredients as they can — from the fruits to the grains to the hops. Family-owned, Crystal Coast has been operating since 2017.

This beer is the third brew in Crystal Coast’s "Tropospheric Series” — a collection of unfiltered IPAs named after types of clouds. The Cumulus boasts Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic hops and sits in the glass with a golden haze.

Even though Crystal Coast calls the Cumulus an NEIPA, we don’t get the juiciness we expect in a New England Style IPA. Instead, the Cumulus presents a dry, grapefruit-like citrus flavor that intensifies to zesty tangerine on the finish. If you’re liking the richness of hazy IPAs but are “juiced out,” we have a beer for you.

Spiced Milk Stout

Fans of Richmond’s Väsen Brewing Company will be familiar with their milk stout, the Velvet Walrus. They will also know that Väsen never just gives you the straight Velvet Walrus. They’re always adding things to it. So it’s “the Velvet Walrus on This” or “the Velvet Walrus on That,” and every combination is worth exploring. This time, we have one of their simpler variants — the Velvet Walrus on Cinnamon & Vanilla. We’ll let you Väsen spell it out for you.

“The latest edition of our silky smooth Velvet Walrus series is a big, malty milk stout made with Ceylon cinnamon and Mexican vanilla beans. Roasted barley and East Kent Golding hops add flavors of dark chocolate and honey, while British ale yeast lend light notes of cherry and orange zest, which lead into a moderately sweet finish with a hint of lingering cinnamon spice.” - Väsen Brewing Company

Pouring like syrup, the Velvet Walrus on Cinnamon & Vanilla is a medium-bodied, dark, dark brown treat that has a light spicy, vanilla sweetness sitting on top of dark chocolate or coffee notes. You don’t want to get this one too cold or you’ll lose the richness. This stout is a great one to use to ring in the new year.
