Wheat Doppelbock
Bocks are sweet lagers that originated in Germany and come in a range of variants. One of the branches of this particular beer tree is an unexpected addition to the Bock Family. It’s the Weizenbock (“Wheat Bock”).
On its surface, the Weizenbock should have very little to do with other bocks. First off, it’s not a lager; it’s an ale. Secondly, its malt bill contains a mix of barley and wheat and not just barley. So, it’s a wheat ale made to taste like a Doppelbock (one of the richer of the bocks). The history behind this strange phenomenon is fascinating and has to do with German politics (an ever-present component of German brewing history) interfacing with the shift of the popularity of beer styles. Don’t worry. We won’t get into that here. We’ll just go straight to Virginia Beach and our friends at Commonwealth Brewing Company.
The Hipster Kryptonite starts with fruit notes on both the nose and palate and ends with an appealing light spiciness. In between is all sorts of bockey goodness leaving you with a honey wheat toast aftertaste that builds as you go through the glass. One of us recently had this beer with some pulled pork and loved it.
(About the kryptonite … we don’t know why it should weaken hipsters, but if you know any, feel free to wrap them in lead before cracking one of these open.)
