Double New England Style IPA
Nashville’s Bearded Iris Brewing openly recognizes the irony of, on one hand, saying that they are dedicated to “variety” and “nuance” when, on the other hand, they clearly like brewing a lot of IPAs, DIPAs, and American Pale Ales. Their response is that there are depths to be plumbed in a single hop varietal and layers to be teased out of a particular malt. When you start mixing them … well then! Now, that’s all fine and good copy, but you collect your money when you can put it where our mouth is.
And darned if they don’t do it with their Another Suggestion New England Style IPA! Here’s the thing about the NEIPA (as far as we’re concerned) … it’s a really good style but really narrow. That is to say, it’s really easy to leave juiciness and find yourself making just an unfiltered IPA.
But in this brew, Bearded Iris bends but not breaks. Through the manipulation of Nelson, Citra, and Motueka hops, the Nashville brewers are able to get a sharp, herbal, citrus note to stand right next to tropical fruitiness. It’s an interesting combo producing a New England Style IPA with a bite!
In a style where it’s become increasingly hard to stand out, Another Suggestion takes a step away from the pack but not from the style’s roots.
