American Pale Ale Brewed with Virginia Pine Needles

So, some years ago craft brewers reflected on the grapefruit flavors that Pacific Northwest hops impart to their favorite IPAs and Double IPAs, and they thought, “Huh … why don’t we just add in actual grapefruit?” The thing is a lot of those hops also impart pine aromas and flavors to their beers. So where were the brewers deciding to brew with actual pine trees? Well, at long last, enter Vienna, VA’s Caboose Brewing Company. For the latest beer in their “For Lovers” series — a series that features beers made from 100% Virginia ingredients — Caboose confidently strides into that gap.

True to the series, the Virginia Pine Pale Ale is an American Pale Ale made entirely from Virginia grown ingredients. The malts are from our very own Murphy & Rude Malting Company, the hops are grown at Wild Hog’s Farm in Madison, VA, and the resulting beer is brewed with Virginia Pine pine needles foraged at the Potomac Gorge — a 1,900 Natural Area that spans Maryland and Virginia and follows the Potomac River as it carves its way along the fault line between the Piedmont Plateau and the Atlantic Coastal Plain.

If you’re expecting this beer to be a slap to the face of pine juice, you will be pleasantly surprised. (Or maybe unpleasantly. We don’t know how your taste buds swing … and we don’t judge.) Caboose’s Virginia Pine Pale Ale is so deliciously smooth. It just slides on by leaving a delicate sprinkling of pine on the floor of your taste bud forest. It’s so nice!
