Lickinghole Creek Three Chopt Tripel Ale
Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Tripel Style Ale
There are a lot of ways to approach a revered beer style like the Trappist-monk-created Tripel. You can try to come to it as correct as you can, making something that would make a monk renounce his vows. You can get “mad scientist” with it until the monks break in and consign you to the Brewer’s Inquisition (which no one expects). For their Tripel, Goochland’s Lickinghole Creek Farm Brewery decided to go for the “Tweak It Into Awesomeness” approach.
It turns out the Tripel is a style that you can play around with if you know what you’re doing. In this case, Lickinghole Creek does so with clever hop substitutions. First off, they bring in the Sterling hop — which is like Saaz’s brasher American cousin — giving you the Saaz hop’s herbal spiciness but more so. They then throw in New Zealand’s Motueka hops to impart some tropical fruit notes. The result is a full, vibrant Tripel which can boast no monks harmed in its making.
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause a “Bogus Beer of the Week” just wouldn’t sell)
Brouwerij Het Anker Lucifer Black
Regularly $11.99 / Now on Sale for $10.96
Belgian Strong Dark Ale
“Lucifer Black (ABV 8.5%) from the Het Anker Brewery is a Belgian Strong Ale that pours deep, dark brown with a beige head. Darkly roasted, rich malts produce an aroma and taste offering notes of chocolate, toasted bread, and dark fruit. The finish is smooth, dry, and warming.”
