Unfiltered American Pale Ale
It’s happening! It’s happening! And, to be honest, any reasonable observer could guess that it was just a matter of time. The New England Style IPA has spread so much of its unfiltered, hazy, juicy hand over the world of IPAs, it’s no surprise that brewers would start applying the same aesthetic to Pale Ales. As a matter of fact, we have a couple such APAs in our store already. So, how many hazy pales does it take before a quirky outlier becomes a new sub-style? We don’t know, but the Hudson River Valley’s Industrial Arts Brewing Company has decided to nudge us closer with what they call a “Northeast Pale Ale.”
Founded in 2016 by brewer Jeff O’Neil, Industrial Arts was doing so well just two years later that the Brewer’s Association listed it as one of that year’s Fastest Growing Small and Independent Breweries. By 2019, papers were calling it Rockland County, New York’s hottest brewery. (Okay, just in case you’re asking, there are over a dozen craft breweries in Rockland County.) Now, Industrial Arts has made it to our little, old, Blue Ridge nestled hamlet.
The Pocket Wrench is a light-bodied Pale Ale coming in at just 4.5% ABV. It is “soaked” in Citra and Comet hops giving you a grassy, zesty, citrusy ride. It and its unfiltered sister beer (the Tools of the Trade) are ideal food beers for fried dishes. So, load up on some for your real picnics or your backyard, social distanced parties.
