Baltic Style Porter
Baltic Porters are strange beer beasties. They were born in Baltic countries when the Porter arrived from England via the relatively new railroad lines of the time. When Baltic brewers started recreating the English style, the resultant beer took a different path.
First off, where all other Porters are ales, Baltic brewers made their porters with lager yeasts. Porter fans also got used to the beers being just a little sour. (No refrigeration on those early trains.) So, they recreated that taste as well. These changes all come together to produce a different take on a classic style. Herndon, VA’s Aslin Beer Company (our first brewery to have back-to-back Beers of the Week) takes pains to hit all these notes and more.
Named after Saulė, a Lithuanian sun goddess, Aslin’s Baltic Style Porter somehow manages to deliver a smooth richness — full-bodied even though it’s a lager. its sour notes ever so delicately linger around the edges managing to accentuate the brew’s chocolaty hazelnuttiness as opposed to countering it. Though not a strict interpretation of the style, Aslin’s Saulé is one of the tastiest Baltic Porters we’ve run into. Here comes the sun!

Hard Apple Cider with Hops
“Dry cider made with Simcoe Cryo Hops. Cryo hops are the concentrated resins and aromatic oils of whole-leaf hops, designed to provide intense hop flavor and aroma. Aromas of ruby red grapefruit, pine forests, fresh cut cedar, and boxwood. The flavor emphasizes the grapefruit notes and is surprisingly juicy and round, with virtually no bitterness.”
