Remhoogte, which means “Braking Heights,” has been located on steep south and southwest facing slopes in Stellenbosch since 1812. Juliet and Murray Boustred purchased the property in 1994 and began producing wine for sale to other vineyards. After several years of collaboration with renowned French oenologist Michel Rolland, the Boustreds gained the confidence to begin making their own high-quality wines. Son Chris spent time working at Hartwell Vineyards in Australia and Stags Leap in Napa Valley before returning to take over the winemaking duties in 2007. Initially famous for their Merlot, Remhoogte is now at least as well known for their Chenin Blanc. This Chenin is grown on the First Light vineyard, so named as it is illuminated by the first rays of sunlight when the sun rises over the Simonsberg in the morning. The vines are between 30 and 50 years old and are hand-harvested and then cooled overnight to around 5 degrees Celsius. Fermentation is allowed to proceed uninoculated in stainless steel tanks. The team ensures there is minimal human intervention in the wine-making process. After spending seven months on the fine lees the wine is racked and bottled.

This bright juicy Chenin with crisp citrus acidy and a long finish is a perfect white wine to usher in Summer.
