Lickinghole Creek Bear Bait

Berliner Weisse with Blueberries

Being inveterate city folk, we were confused about the name of this beer. (Also, the label kind of threw us. Those are big claws. Is it supposed to be a Halloween-in-July type thing?) Yeah, we were lost … until Goochland’s Lickinghole Creek reminded us that they are a farm brewery (Virginia’s first). That means when they brew, they use many ingredients that they grow, like the blueberries for this beer … and bears — forever unconcerned about claims of personal property — love blueberries.

Lickinghole Creek starts this beer by brewing a Berliner Weisse style wheat ale. (That’s an unfiltered wheat ale brewed with salted water.) They then sour the brew by infecting it with lactobacillus bacteria. Left to itself, the resultant beer would be sharply tart and salty. However, Lickinghole Creek takes one more step by adding in fresh blueberries (no doubt wrested from the clutches of ursine invaders).

So, with the first sip, you get a dose of high, lemon-like tartness, but as you continue to drink, the fruit notes of the blackberries start to come through. The whole thing becomes a goto summer sour, and Lickinghole Creek has already done all the bear dodging for you.

Oh, these brewers who insist on releasing BA stouts in the summer!

Bourbon Barre-Aged Imperial Stout

IT’S BAAAAAACK!!!

We snagged this BA Beer last year for the first time and fell in love with its rich, bourbon barrel goodness. We’re so pleased to get another shot at it this year! Doesn’t matter if it’s 90 degrees out. We’re 100% for drinking this sucker!

“Deep in our barrel room, out of light's reach, our legendary Narwhal Imperial Stout rests in bourbon barrels for nearly a year. After aging, it emerges anew: rich with notes of oak, vanilla and coconut layered onto the Stout's malt flavors of dark chocolate and espresso. Enjoy this beast of a beer.”
