The brothers at the Abbey of St. Joseph in Spencer, MA have done what no other American Cistercian order has done — they’ve brewed. St. Joseph’s Abbey is America’s only Trappist brewery, and their beers have just come into our area even though they’ve been brewing since 2013.

Their Monk’s Reserve Ale is a Quadrupel and a standout among their offerings. Along with presenting the fruit notes that you’d expect from a Quad, it is much richer than its European counterparts. That change is not a bad one as it sends us swimming in deep dark fruits along with brown sugar and molasses notes. It’s great. It turns out that even American monks like to turn things up to “eleven.”
