Smartmouth Missing Digit IPA

Hemp IPA

As if he needed anything more to fill out his legend, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead joined the rank of legendary rock guitarists all while missing one finger on his right hand (the result of childhood carelessness). Inspired by the fact that in 2019 Garcia’s birthday and National IPA Day fell on the same day, Greg Papp — head brewer of Norfolk’s Smartmouth Brewing Company — decided to brew an homage to his favorite musician. The result was the Missing Digit, a hemp IPA.

For the Missing Digit IPA, Smartmouth hops their brew with Cascade and Centennial hops and then dry-hops it with Strata hops. The resulting beer is full of citrus and pine flavors with a lovely, dank aroma. However, the standout feature is the toastiness in the malt backbone that comes from toasted hemp seeds. Now, you don’t have to be a fan of Garcia’s music, but it’s not hard not to be a fan of his beer!

Hard Apple Cider with Ginger

In Burlington, VT, the people at Citizen Cider have a local character who’s known as “The Mayor.” This gentleman likes to put a little ginger in his cider. So, to make things easier for him (and to make things more pleasant for all the rest of us), the Citizens made a cider with the ginger already in it.

The Dirty Mayor is a sweet apple cider with a strong dose of ginger. Easy to drink, it’s like an appley ginger ale (or maybe a gingery apple ale, either one).
