Dogfish Head Wake Up World Wide Stout
$37.99 for the 12oz bottle four-pack
Imperial Coffee Stout with Milk and Maple Syrup
For years now, Milton DE’s Dogfish Head Brewing Company has had three extra special beers — the 120 Minute IPA, the Raison d’Extra, and the World Wide Stout — all of them big ticket beers, all of them ridiculously good. Though at one time they used to be released annually, the changing beer market has found Dogfish Head being more idiosyncratic in their availability. Fortunately, the legendary World Wide Stout is back — this time with a twist!
With the Wake Up World Wide Stout, Dogfish Head merges responsibility with taste. The grains for the malt are regeneratively grown. The milk is plant-based. The maple syrup is … well, it’s maple syrup, but that’s not a bad thing, right? Most importantly, what Dogfish Head brings to this version of the World Wide Stout is coffee — rich, dark coffee. We’re talking about cold pressed Finco Terrerito coffee, grown in Copan, Honduras and roasted by Rise Up Coffee Roasters in Easton, MD. As you would expect from Dogfish Head — who does not trade in half measures — Boy! Do they lean into the coffee!
You can really taste the bitterness of this dark roast. This coffee stout is not for your cream and sugar coffee drinkers! (If this is what this stout tastes like with the milk added, we shudder to think what it was like before!) You get a nutty earthiness on the nose before you dive into this imperial stout — mostly dry with the maple syrup imparting a touch of blackstrap molasses sweetness. Surprisingly delicious, if Dogfish doesn’t wake you up with the coffee, this version of the World Wide Stout wakes you up with its richness.
