Big Bottle Beers of the Week

Wheatland Spring Währing

Regularly $16.99 / Now on Sale for $14.96
(750ml bottle)
Oak Barrel-Aged Vienna Lager

Wheatland Spring Farm and Brewery sits in the western outskirts of Waterford, VA, north of Purcellville and Leesburg. It’s a family-owned farm which focuses most of its farm product on its beer making. They grow much of the grain they ferment, sourcing the rest from two small batch craft malters. The fruits, vegetables, and herbs you find in their beer are also the fruits (vegetables and herbs) of their toil as well. Speaking of wells … they pull their water from the underground source of the actual Wheatland Spring, for which the area and the farm are named.

The Währing is named after the Vienna district in which co-owner John Branding lived as a kid. So that means we have a Vienna Lager brewed by someone who’s actually from (or at least has lived in) Vienna. Can you get cooler than that? Well, actually, they can.

After making their “farm to fermentation” beer, Branding and his brew crew age this Vienna Lager in oak barrels. Instead of softening the flavor profile (as oak is wont to do), the lager picks up the tannins from the oak helping to fatten out the hop profile. As far as lagers go, for some reason VA craft brewers have a particular yen for the Vienna Lager in particular. With that totally non-data-backed observation in mind, it’s nice to see someone do something a little special with the style.

Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause we need another new beer for another new year)

Grimm Double Negative

Regularly $9.99 / Now on Sale for $8.96
(16.7oz bottle)
Imperial Russian Style Stout

Continuing the bodacious bombardment of Brooklyn breweries in our shop, we are pleased to offer this stout from Grimm Artisanal Ales.

Grimm was started by husband and wife team, Joe Grimm and Lauren Carter Grimm. They met at Brown University in 2005 (like you do) and started brewing (best second date ever). Out of college, married, and living in Brooklyn, they developed beer recipes in their apartment while Joe played music and Lauren sculpted, creating conceptual art projects. Finally, a trip to Belgium and exposure to its beer pushed them over the edge. In 2013, they became nomad brewers, making Grimm Artisanal Ales at other brewers’ facilities. In 2018 they opened their own brewery and taproom, where, today, they treat their brewing as a further extension of their artistic practices.

The Double Negative Imperial Stout is a Grimm beer (but not a “grim beer”) that comes from their nomadic days. It is a full on Imperial Russian Style Stout. Forget your smooth, chocolaty, off-dry numbers. The Double Negative is a good, old fashioned, big ass, stout with a strong dark chocolate and espresso streak running through it … or a strong dark chocolate and espresso run streaking through it, unabashed in its naked roastiness, making it oh, so not not great.
