Sweet Melomel Made with Damson Plums
Atheling Meadworks has a new mead, and where their other meads are semi-sweet, the Aelfwynn’s Song is an unabashedly fully sweet melomel (a mead made with fruit).
Ælfwynn was the last ruler of the ancient English kingdom of Mercia in 918 ACE. She inherited the throne from her mother creating the only instance of woman-to-woman dynastic inheritance in the Medieval British Isles. Sadly, Ælfwynn’s rule lasted only a few months until her uncle Edward the Elder from Essex put an end to both Ælfwynn’s reign and Mercia in one fell swoop. (Cold move, Uncle Ed.)
Aelfwynn’s song is made of raspberry blossom honey, which, in and of itself, sports a fruity taste. However, the honey puts us only at the beginning. Atheling sends us further down our fruit journey by adding damson plums. The plums and the raspberry blossom honey turn this mead into a fruit bomb! It’s like drinking the filling of a raspberry plum tart.
Atheling admits that it’s just coincidence that they have released their latest “song” in time for Women’s History Month. However, that shouldn’t stop you from using it to toast departed queendoms past.
