Beer of the Week! 05/24/22

Diamondback Papi

Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Hazy IPA

We know. We know. Unless they’ve been made by Latinx owned breweries your inclination, just on principle, is to avoid beers named “Papi.” That’s righteous. We get it. However, hear us out on this one … Diamondback Brewing Company in Baltimore, MD — founded and run by non-Hispanic European Americans — has put out an appealing and different take on the flavor profile usually found in a New England Style IPA (which, though unfiltered, this beer is not).

The Papi is brewed with Citra, Simcoe, and El Dorado hops, a pretty familiar hop construction for a modern IPA. You have two traditional northwest American hops that strongly lean to the citrusy and even piney side and then a hop to throw in some tropical fruit notes to keep you from wandering too far down that path. However, Diamonback’s Papi stands out not because of its hops but because of its malts.

The Papi is brewed with Honey Malt, which — as the name implies — can add honey notes to your beers. So you’ve got the citrus of the hops contrasted by the sweet notes of the malt … which, we know, is what beer is about, but (what can we say) it works especially well here. Diamondback also throws in some malted oats to smooth out the mouthfeel of the brew.

All these components gel into a yummy package. This isn’t an IPA that jumps out and “Wow’s!” you. It’s just a deeply, deeply tasty brew.

Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause you need a flip side that people can catch you on.)

Lickinghole Creek Nuclear Nugget

Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Imperial IPA Brewed with Honey

We just couldn’t resist pairing an IPA brewed with Honey Malt with a Double IPA brewed with actual honey!

Lickinghole Creek Farm Brewery in Goochland makes this beer with a fistful of Centennial hops and then follows them with a second fistful of Nugget hops. Citrus and spicy herbalness and pine comin’ atcha’. Bwam! To round out all that bitterness, Lickinghole adds in local clover honey. Along with adding a touch of sweetness, the honey also makes the beer a little richer.

The Nuclear Nugget is one of our favorite brews, and we also couldn’t resist saying this … it really puts the “bee” in “beer.” ;P
