Beer of the Week! 07/26/22

Antietam Kore’s Nectar Pomegranate Wheat Ale

Regularly $16.99 / Now on Sale for $15.96
Wheat Ale with Pomegranate Juice

“Kore” (Κόρη) is Greek for “maiden,” and is another way to refer to the classical world’s most famous abductee, Persephone. As we understand it, “Kore” was commonly used when she and her mother Demeter (goddess of vegetation) were worshipped together. So one would be “the Mother” and the other “the Maiden.”

In case you’ve been under a rock (that you’ve had to push up a hill only to have it roll back and crush you again and again and again) and have not heard Persephone’s story, it goes — in brief — like this … Persephone, daughter of Demeter, was abducted by Hades (god of the underworld) to marry him. (Yikes!) Fun fact: Hades was also her uncle. (Yikes!!) In response, Demeter ceased to allow crops to grow, and thus, Zeus (Persephone’s other uncle and also her father (Yikes!!!)) went to bargain with Hades for Persephone’s release. Another fun fact: Once in the underworld, if you eat or drink anything, you have to stay. Persephone remained hungry until finally breaking open a pomegranate (a symbol of everything from fertility to rebirth to marriage) and eating a number of its seeds. So she had to stay. And that is how we — through Antietam Brewery in Hagerstown, MD — find ourselves with Kore’s Nectar Pomegranate Wheat Ale.

It’s been so long since we’ve had fruit in a beer that wasn’t a sour (or an IPA) that we’d forgotten what that experience was like. In this case, it’s pretty good. The pomegranate is prominent without overpowering the wheat. In fact, the two conspire to cover each other’s tarter sides making the beer surprisingly smooth and tasty.

Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause we just have to spread the good brews.)

Aslin Master of Oranges

Regularly $19.99 / Now on Sale for $17.96
Double New England Style IPA

Aslin Beer Company’s Master of Oranges is a hybrid version of two of their other New England Style IPAs — their Double Orange Starfish and their Master of Karate (one of our favorite NEIPAs).

As juicy and pink grapefruity and orangy as this beer tastes, we’re always surprised to reflect on the fact that Aslin gets those tastes from manipulating Mosaic, Amarillo, Galaxy, and Citra hops. As far as we understand, no oranges were harmed in the making of this brew.

Also … For this week, get our Master of Oranges Three-Pack containing one can each of

  • the Master of Oranges,

  • the Master of Karate,

  • and the Double Orange Starfish

for $14.99 — Limited supply!!
