AleSmith / Revision Split Aces IPA

West Coast Style IPA

Here we have two West Coast breweries who have created the only time when double dealing is a good thing. AleSmith Brewing Company from San Diego and Revision Brewing Company from Sparks, NV share the duties in dishing out this IPA.

Imagine our joy when the first cards fall and we see what they’ve given us! We’ve got one Idaho 7 hop — that’s a tangerine/zesty card. The Chinook is a classic West Coast hop card. We can split with both of those. The Mosaic is a bit of a wild card, but we could probably play it for some exotic fruit notes. Take in the right malt and yeast, and we could be sitting on a nice West Coast Style IPA without going bust.

Clear, tasty … we know it’s annoying to have someone kibitz, but just go for it on this one. No need to agonize over whether you need to hit or stay.

Zero Gravity Liquid Hot Magma

Hazy Double IPA

Zero Gravity Brewing Company gives us a new hazy IPA, only we can’t rightly tell you what’s in it because these Burlington, VT brewers won’t tell us.

Zero Gravity starts with an American Pilsner malt, providing a light, dry base so that the hops can really come out. Then come some new experimental hops providing mostly tropical fruit notes, some that are familiar and some that are different. (Isn’t that what you want in an experimental hop?) We get a little orange and some pineapple. We also get a little lime and a flavor that Zero Gravity identified as “lychee,” but that we thought of as fresh papaya.

Regardless, the gestalt of tastes is quite pleasant — a quiet but multifaceted juiciness. Now, what that has to do with hot magma, we cannot say. Also, looking at the label, it looks like Zero Gravity has gone from magma to lava to lava lamps. We don’t know. Their marketing may be confusing, but their brewing, so far, is dead on.
