Beer of the Week! 08/30/22
Elder Pine 10 Plato Pivo
Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Czech Style Pilsner
As much as we love big beers (and we do love big beers), we will always attest that a really well-made Czech style Pilsner is a thing of beauty. Well, Gaithersburg, MD’s Elder Pine Brewing and Blending has gone and put beauty in the stein of the beer holder.
So, “Plato” here doesn’t refer to the number of buddies living in a cave theorizing what real beer would taste like. “Plato” refers to the Plato Gravity Scale — a way of measuring the concentration of dissolved solids in a liquid. When dealing with wort — the mixture of water, malted grains, and other materials that becomes beer after fermentation — most of these solids are sugars. So being able to measure them gives you an idea of how much alcohol your beer will have. A 10 Plato wort should yield you around 4.0% ABV, which is where this Pilsner lands.
Eminently drinkable and unsinkable, Elder Pine’s 10 Plato Pivo is crafted with a “carefully selected” blend of Bohemian malts that are fermented at a super low temperature courtesy of a yeast from a Plzen microbrewery. (!) They then bitter the beer with Saaz hops from the Czech Republic. Heck, we should be speaking Czech after a few sips of this beer! As it is, its clean, light, effervescence as it delicately offers up that classic Pilsner taste has us saying, “Who knew you only needed to go as far as Maryland to get a little taste of Plzen?”
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause even in casual beer drinking, seconds count.)
Commonwealth Tranquilo
Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Mexican Style Dark Lager
Commonwealth Brewing Company from Virginia Beach calls the Tranquilo a “Dark Mexican Lager,” but it pours a light copper like an amber. “We’re not ones to judge a beer by its color,” we thought, “but someone must’ve made a mistake.” However, the Tranquilo’s taste is definitely not that of a mild Mexican amber.
The Tranquilo offers up a beautiful caramel flavor with just a touch of roast on the finish. Though it remains a light-bodied lager, it’s so rich that you’ll want to take your time savoring it rather than tossing it back.
If you’re looking for a full-flavored beer experience but still find it too hot to go for a heavier brew, the Tranquilo is worth a try. It’s just waiting to follow up your carne asada tacos, your pico de gallo with corn, or to make an appearance at the last of your summer picnics.
