Thanksgiving Beers
Consider pairing beer with your Thanksgiving meal. The right beer is perfectly set up to handle the rich, savory flavors of your Turkey Day feast. Here are a few suggestions of brews to boost your gustatory gains.
Einsiedler Rosengarten Alpenbier Swiss Spelt Unfiltered Beer
$17.99 for the 12oz bottle six-pack
Organic Unfiltered European Pale Lager with Spelt
Einsiedler Bier has been brewing in Switzerland since 1872. They make this beer with a malt bill of 70% caramelized organic barely malt and 30% organic spelt (an heirloom wheat strain). Its hops are also organically grown. Left unfiltered, it has enough body and flavor to not get washed away by your turkey, gravy, and stuffing despite being a lager. Here’s an option if you don’t want a part of your meal to fill you up further than you’re already getting filled up.
Westmalle Double
$12.99 for the 750ml bottle
Trappist Double
The Westmalle is a Trappist Dubbel (the originator of the style) brewed by the monks of the Abdij der Trappisten Westmalle in Malle, Belgium. Its mix of caramel and fruit flavors should compliment your meal while presenting just enough astringency to cut through the rich, fatty fare.
Ballad Double Brown
$13.99 for the 16oz can four-pack
Double Brown Ale
This beer is your “Go Big or Go Home” option for Thanksgiving. Ballad Brewing Company from Danville, VA kicks out this delicious, rich malt bomb that gives you a wave of caramel and toffee notes that you can ride all the way to your slices of pie.
Rodenbach Caractère Rouge
$23.99 for the 750ml bottle
Flanders Red with Cherries, Cranberries, and Raspberries
From famed Belgian sour producer Brouwerij Rodenbach comes this mixed fermentation, barrel-aged, fruity, blended sour ale. Rodenbach starts with a mixture that is 2/3 a barrel-aged version of their classic Flanders Red and 1/3 of a fresh version. They then add sour cherries, cranberries, and raspberries. These additions allow a rush of tart berry fruit to mix with the sour red. We featured this beer at a recent tasting, and one of us correctly pegged it as the perfect Thanksgiving beer. Cranberry sauce? Oh, we’ve got your cranberry sauce right here!
For Further Consideration
Pumpkin Ales — Most people stop thinking about pumpkin ales after Halloween, but that is a shame because pumpkin ales make great Thanksgiving beers. We have a handful of pumpkin beers left, so don’t wait if you don’t want to take our word for it.
Cider — Another option for your Thanksgiving beverage bounty is cider. You can have some sparkling sweet cider for the kids and teeotalers, but a dry cider can be a refreshing Turkey Day option. Try one of our Albemarle CiderWorks ciders.
