Michael Plank Hefeweizen
Normally $15.99 / Now on Sale for $14.96
Hefeweizen
Brauerei Michael Plank sits in Laaber, Germany. (That’s east central Bavaria between Munich and Nuremberg.) Plank’s family has been brewing there since 1617. Michael Plank represents the 17TH(!) generation of Plank brewers. (What!?!) That means the Plank family started serving their beer to the general public just ten years after the English started serving small pox to Virginia’s Powhatan natives.
When, at the age of 21, he took over from his father, Michael modernized the brewing process. Since then, the brewery has garnered a passel of awards (including World Beer Cups). One reason is the long brewing tradition, but another is Plank’s ingredients.
All of his ingredients are grown right there in Bavaria. The Hallertau hops he uses, the barley and wheat — all grown a short distance away by families/businesses that the Planks, of course, have generations of experience with. This situation avails them short travel times between them and their suppliers and, thus, fresher high quality raw materials … and we can really taste it in the beer!
Pouring a surprisingly dark color, the Michael Plank Hefeweizen is the fullest, richest hefeweizen that we’ve tasted. It sports a deep grain flavor with a bracing orange-like tang both on the edges and the finish. Not content to be a light, refreshing companion to your salad or nachos, this Hefe is ready to sit down next to you and help you take on your burger or barbecue.
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause you shot the Keg Stand three times in a row, and that gives you an extra ball.)
Casita Double Knit Strangers
Normally $19.99 / Now on Sale for $18.96
Double New England Style IPA
From Wilson, North Carolina, Casita Brewing Company is brought to you by Mahalia and Ryan Witter-Merithew. Ryan brews the beer, Mahalia runs the business, and they both project a warm, homey, “welcome to our little place” feel about their brewery. They make Casita very hometown oriented, whether it’s donating to local non-profits or helping sponsor Wilson’s first pride event. They also make pretty decent beer, and we’re excited to talk about our second offering from them.
The Double Knit Strangers is a Double New England Style IPA brewed with oats and wheat (to knock you lazy with the hazy) and hopped with Citra, Simcoe, Enigma, and Mosaic hops. That’s one straight-up juicy hop, two citrusy hops, and one that could go either way, and it makes perfect sense the way the whole package goes.
From these ingredients, Ryan fashions a solid, balanced, creamy DNEIPA. Citrus zest runs around with tangerine and passion fruit flavors like kids running around the jungle gym while their guardians sit and become “playtime in the park” friends.
Says Casita’s copy for this brew (probably written by Mahalia), “Strangers are sometimes just friends you haven’t met yet. Cheers to sweater weather and all those double-knit strangers we just haven’t met yet.”
See? Told ya’ they were like that.
