Charles Towne Sub Rosa

$19.99 for the 16oz four-pack cans
American Strong Ale

It seems kind of strange that a brewery in Charleston, SC would write copy like this, “To help battle the colder temps, we brewed up an American Strong Ale that doubles as a portable beer blanket.” We mean, it’s Charleston … it’s Charleston during the ongoing, continually warming climate apocalypse! Right now when we’re writing this piece, it’s 76 degrees there and will only drop below 60 once in the next 10 days! Oh well, Charles Towne’s founder/head brewer is from Massachusetts. Guess you can take the person out of the winter …

The Sub Rosa is an American Strong Ale, which usually means (as with this beer) — heavy on the malt, heavy on the hops. It’s like an American Barleywine with a different flavor profile. We get a lot of juiciness in this brew, but not from the hops — from the malt. It’s a round and floral flavor in an ale that remains light-bodied. It would be too much if the malt didn’t meld so nicely with the brew’s persistent hoppiness.

The Sub Rosa is what you want in an American Strong Ale. Get it on the cold side of cool (but not totally cold) and have it as an end of the evening / settle down / kids are in bed / new season of Picard has just been released beer. Engage!
