Beer of the Week! 04/25/23
Frost Beer Works
The town of Hinesburg sits in northwestern Vermont at the foot of the Green Mountains, a little more than 100 miles south of Montreal. Surrounded by farmland, it’s 25,250 acres in area and has around 4,700 inhabitants (based on the 2020 census). With a little more than a tenth of our population, Hinesburg is a small, northern Vermont town … and even it has a craft brewery. (Seriously, though — that shouldn’t be a surprise. Scottsville is smaller, and they have one. (Shout out to James River!) Heck, Sperryville has two. Sperryville!)
To hear Garin Frost talk, his progression into craft brewing was gradual but steady. First Frost was a homebrewer initially interested in German style beers. During those years, he developed a lasting focus in hoppy ales. He went from a small brewing kit, to a tricked out arrangement in his basement, to a small brewery built in 1000 Square foot space in 2015. By 2022, Frost Beer Works was maxing out a small production brewery. Today he ships to places like here, where snow is little more than a pre-Climate Change dream. (How did those 90 degree spring days love you, huh? Don’t worry. We have some cool Vermont beer to take the edge off.)
Frost Starchild
Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Hazy IPA
The Starchild is a dry and zesty IPA. Just shy of creamy in the mouthfeel, you get aromas of tangerine, papaya, and pine on the nose. Such fruit notes should be no surprise as Frost tells us that this IPA is made with New Zealand hops. Though it is hazy, it’s clean and focused with a bready malt bill teased by a little lemon citrus at the end.
Frost Plush
Regularly $15.99 / Now on Sale for $14.96
Double New England Style IPA
Named in honor of former Stone Temple Pilots frontman, Scott Weiland (who died the same year Frost started), the Plush is a full-bodied double New England Style IPA. Dry-hopped with Simcoe, sniffing it is like cutting into good rye bread. Those resiny, rye notes travel into the glass, where the Plush is dry but also juicy, giving you layered tropical fruit flavors that wear a bitter haze around them like one would wear a fur coat (or a fake fur coat if you believe mink is murder).
