Belgian Pilsner
Six generations of Cornelissens have been making beer outside of Bree, far in the northwestern corner of Belgian Flanders. It all started with brewer Jan Mathys Cornelissen. After he won the Patriarchy Lottery by receiving a son from wife Anna Maria, Jan taught his scion the fine art of the Beer, and it was Jef who would later founded the brewery that still holds his father’s and his father’s father’s and his father’s father’s father’s name.
We know Brouwerij Cornelissen for their Herkenrode line of abbey ales — the lovely Cister and the excellent Vesper (which is sadly out of stock with our distributor), so we had to try their Pilsner.
It was Jef’s son, Jaak, who brought us the Pax Pilsner in 1937. (Was the name a response to Germany’s occupation of the Rhineland?) The year before Jaak built a new brewery to focus on lagers, and the Pax was one of the results.
So smooth it’s almost creamy, the Pax reminds you that the Belgian Pilsner is a much more urbane creature than its Czech and German predecessors. Light and refreshing, the Pax still holds complex malt and hop notes. Not to speak ill of another beer, but this brew is the lager that Stella Artois wants to grow up to be. (Oh! We said it!)
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause it’s double your brewer, double the fun.)
One Family It’s a Racket
Regularly $12.99 / Now on Sale for for $11.96
New England Style IPA
We don’t know how One Family can consistently make such tasty beer at such a good price point, but we hope they never forget their secret. They certainly have not here.
The It’s a Racket is a New England Style IPA made with Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops. Even though none of those are Australian nor New Zealand hops, you still get a balanced juiciness that nicely blends both grapefruit and tropical fruit notes. With just a tinge of citrus on the finish, this brew is ever so drinkable, going down much easier than Al Capone did. (No tax evasion cases were filed in the enjoyment of this beer.)
