Beer of the Week! 09/25/23
Evil Twin Our Second Most Popular IPA
Normally $20.99 / Now on Sale for $18.96
West Coast Style IPA
This brew is Evil Twin’s flagship West Coast Style IPA, but to us it’s got a little “east” thrown in — not East Coast, a little farther east than that.
Though Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergso, the evil twin behind Evil Twin, famously started as a nomadic brewer (brewing his beers in other people’s breweries), in 2016 he moved his family from Denmark to New York City and opened a brewery. This beer is one of his New York Beers.
Evil Twin labels the Our Second Most Popular IPA as a West Coast IPA. They hop it with Columbus, Citra, and Simcoe hops, which certainly sounds like a recipe for a West Coast IPA. However …
… the Our Second Most Popular IPA is light-bodied with a mild malt backbone. The hop flavor is what’s important here, and that flavor walks up and kindly shakes your hand. It doesn’t punch you on the shoulder like a West Coast IPA does (with two for flinching). It reminds us of what people originally meant by an “East Coast IPA” — an IPA that was more in the British style than in the American style. Don’t get us wrong. It’s still your buddy.
We haven’t seen Evil Twin make bad beers yet, and this one is full of spicy, herbal side of those infamously citrus hops. Makes us wonder what their most popular IPA is.
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause we see you got that family-sized bag of pretzels for your home bar.)
Zero Gravity Black Cat Porter
Normally $13.99 / Now on Sale for $12.96
Robust Porter
Though the Porter is originally an English style, the Robust Porter is strictly an American invention — a Porter that’s been pumped up with American hops. The Black Cat Porter is Burlington, VT’s Zero Gravity’s take on the Robust Porter.
Black Barley, Chocolate, Crystal, and Maris Otter malts give you dark and roasty flavors that are mixed with East Kent Goldings hops, perfectly respectable English hops for a porter … oh, and Cascade hops too. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Cascade hops tip you over into a pungent bitterness, so much so that this brew could almost be what people used to call a “Black IPA.”
This black cat is like our experience with black cats — silly people avoid them, but they just want to cozy up to you and make you purr along with them.
