Ayinger Oktober Fest-Märzen
$15.99 for the 11.16oz bottle four-pack
Märzen Lager
Official Munich Oktoberfest ended last Tuesday. DC’s Oktoberfest was this past weekend. Cincinnati’s Oktoberfest was way back in the middle of September.
However, the Big Lick Oktoberfest down in Roanoke is this coming Saturday, and Richmond’s Oktoberfest isn’t until a couple of weeks from now. So, clearly Virginia isn’t done with fall beer celebrating. If you’re on VOT (“Virginia Oktoberfest Time”), then rejoice! We still have Oktoberfest beers, like this one, one of our favorites.
The German town of Aying sits less than 10 miles southeast of Munich. However, being outside of the great city has kept the Ayinger Brewery from being eligible to be an official Oktoberfest brewery. That’s why they, out of respect for tradition, avoid the name “Oktoberfest,” referring to this brew as a “Fest-Märzen.”
It doesn’t have the fruit notes or the sharpness of the Spaten and isn’t as malt-forward as the Paulaner. The Ayinger sits right square in the bready, biscuity pocket of what you want from a Märzen lager.
