Fruit Pilsner
In the early aughts, a buddy of New Yorker Evan Klein invited him to homebrew. After a while, the buddy stopped, but Klein kept going. He even shared some of his beer with one of the founders of Sixpoint Brewing Company, who liked what he tasted so much that Klein ended up working for him as a brewer. After two years at Sixpoint, Klein founded Barrier Brewing Company in Oceanside, Long Island, with his first beers available in 2010.
The Makin’ Waves is Barrier’s small batch beer series, in which they brew different beers in different styles. What we have here is Number 23, a Pilsner, but not a regular Pilsner. Barrier hops this Pilsner with Saaz hops — a perfectly respectable, traditional way to go for a Pilsner. However, Barrier doesn’t stop there and throws in Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin hops as well. For an extra citrus zing, they then add lemon peel!
This is a zesty, zippy unfiltered Pilsner with a lot going on in it. Yet it still remains light-bodied. Who said Pilsners can’t be interesting?
