1OO% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (Abruzzo DOC)

Abruzzo sits on Italy’s central eastern coast. It’s a land of mountains, of Medieval and Renaissance hilltop towns, and of beaches on the Adriatic Sea. The main grape of Arbuzzo is Montepulciano. Though this gently tannic, low acid variety is the second most grown red grape in Italy, planted all around its central and southern regions (though not — confusingly enough — around the northern, Tuscan town of Montepulciano), it is in Abruzzo where it finds its home and greatest fame.

Montevento’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo differs from many others in the fullness of its flavor. Rather than being juicy (or even jammy) as other Montepulcianos can be, this one features bright, deep fruit, reminiscent of pomegranates or figs, wrapped in light leathery tannins.

Though not the standard choice for a summertime red, we were so taken with this wine that we just had to feature it for you.
