Friday Night Wines 1/11/18

Once again, we welcome our friends from Le Storie Wines to help us explore Italy's hidden treasures!

On the docket:

Capolino Perlingieri Sannio Fiano ‘Nembo’ (‘Cloud’) 2017

100% estate-grown Fiano, this wine is made in the cellar of a beautiful old stone house the family has restored, not far from their vineyards and the house is on their label. The wines are made by 3rd generation winemaker Alexia Capolino Perlingieri with evident passion and attention to detail, for example, the grapes are checked on a sorting table after being de-stemmed in order to remove leaves and bits of stem, a technique that is normal for very expensive fine wines but not at all common in this area, or at this price.

Normally $19.99/ tonight $17.99

Maculan Pino y Toi 2017

The name references the varieties from which it is made: “Pino” for the 25% Pinot Bianco and 15% Pinot Grigio, and “Toi” for the 60% Tai as it is now referred to in the Veneto (formerly Tocai Friulano). All the grapes are sourced from various vineyards in and around the town of Breganze, where the three-generation Maculan family winery is located.

Normally $17.99/ tonight $16.19

Abbona Sori Dij But Dogliani 2016

The Abbona family has generations of history in Dogliani, which is both the name of a village and of the broader wine zone that surrounds it (like Barolo, which is a short drive north).

Anna Maria Abbona’s oldest vines were planted by her grandfather in the thirties, and the vineyards are steep and perfectly exposed. 'Sori' is Piedmontese dialect for the sunny south face of a hill. 'But' or Butti is the name of the hamlet where Anna Maria and her husband Franco's house and cellar are. Dolcetto is one of the most pleasing and flexible of all Italian red wines.

Normally $19.99/ tonight $17.99

Sassetti La Querciolina Montecucco Rosso 2015

The Montecucco DOC sits in southern Tuscany’s Maremma zone between the hallowed Brunello di Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano appellations. The Livio Sassetti family run the La Querciolina estate organically with the same care and dedication as their flagship Pertimali estate, famed for its impeccable Brunello. This is a bargain Sangiovese from a hidden appellation right in the middle of one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions.

Normally $21.99/ tonight $19.79
