Red Tail Ridge is a vineyard and winery located on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York devoted to experimentation and sustainability. We met winemaker Nancy Irelan just a few weeks ago and tasted through a lineup that showcased her astonishing versatility and skill. Nancy, a scientist by training and personality, can give you every chemical, geographical, and agricultural detail about her wines, but manages to do it with humor and charm. She left behind a research position in the California corporate wine world to start her own winery in New York with her husband, whom she trained to be the Red Tail Ridge viticulturist. They produce very small lots of their wines (sometimes fewer than 50 cases), and each one is a carefully polished jewel. Though the vineyards are not certified organic or biodynamic, Irelan utilizes a sustainable and environmentally balanced approach in their management. Red Tail Ridge is also New York State’s first LEED®- Gold Certified Winery, running exclusively on geothermal energy for heating, cooling and refrigeration.
