Sometimes It Better Be Basque!

El País Vasco (or Basque Country) sits on north central Spain’s Cantabrian coast, bumping up against southwestern France. It’s a region famously distinct from the Spanish provinces around it. El País Vasco has its own geography, its own history, its own culture, and its own language. Not surprisingly, it also has its own wine. In decline for most of the 20th Century, the region experienced a resurgence in the 1980s and is now one of Spain’s most prized wine regions.

The Txakolí DOC (pronounce the Basque “tx” like “ch” with a little “t” in front of it — “T’CHOK-o-lee”) produces rosés and reds, but it is overwhelmingly known for its whites, made, primarily, from the local Hondarrabi Zuri (or “Ondarrabi Zuri”) grape. One local tour guide from company, Devour, says this, “For me, as well as for many Basque people, Txakolí is a super special wine that’s just like the Cantabrian Sea in many ways. It’s slightly salty, slightly sparkling and chilly — but absolutely fantastic!”

This Wine Wednesday, we invite you to join us as we indulge in our ongoing love affair with Txakolí wine. Feel free to come by our walk-up tasting any time in the hour and a half.
