Wine Wednesday: Le Midi (The South of France)

  • Market Street Wine 311 East Market Street Charlottesville United States (map)

Et Maintenant, Le Midi

France’s the Midi region stretches through Aquitaine, Provence, and Languedoc. It’s a region cradled by mountains. Beneath it are the Pyrenees and Spain. To the east is Italy and the Alps. It’s also a mostly Mediterranean climate. (If, traditionally, you’ve been able to grow olive trees, you’re in the Midi.) The region shows marks of both Catalan and Italian culture, and, in fact, it wasn’t even a part of France, proper, until 1860, when the Duchy of Savoy ceded the county of Nice over to France. We tend to just refer to the area (especially its eastern portion) as, “the South of France.”

Of course with Provence and Langueduc, the Midi has some prominent wine regions. For this Wine Wednesday, please join guest pourer Geoff Bell from distributor The Robins Cellars for a taste of southern French wines. This tasting is another free, walk-up tasting, perfect for letting you imagine you’re in the south of France in the middle of another cold January week.
