Friday Tasting: Boxwood Estate Winery

  • Market Street Wine 311 East Market Street Charlottesville United States (map)

Guest Pourer Marcus Witten from Boxwood Winery!

Surrounded by horse farms and Civil War sites, Boxwood Estate Winery in Middleburg, VA is the child of John Kent Cooke. Turns out when Cooke wasn’t owning Washing D.C. NFL teams, he was collecting French wine, especially Bordeaux. Now Cooke is convinced that Virginia can make fine wines inspired by the Bordeaux that he loves. Hence, Boxwood Estate Winery and its sustainably grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc — all certified by France’s Etablissement National Technique pour l'Amelioration de la Viticulture. (The estate also plants Sauvignon Gris certified by UC Davis’ Foundation Plant Services program.)

Winemaker Stephen Rigby prefers a minimalist approach to winemaking. He and wine consultant Stèphane Derenoncourt oversee a process that involves fermenting destemmed whole berry grapes in stainless steel tanks and aging their wine in French oak.

Come join us between 5:00 and 6:30 PM, as Marcus Witten — the General Manager of Boxwood's Tasting Room Wine Bar at National Harbor — pours us some Boxwood Wines. It’s another fine, free, Friday Virginia wine tasting from us at Market St. Wine. We hope to see you there!
