Dirt Pour
One of the components of winemaking that we don’t talk about a lot is the effect of soil on grapes and, thus, on the wines made from those grapes. The more fools, us, because the effect is great. (It’s actually one of Erin’s favorite topics.) If you take grapes X, Y, and Z grown in Alpha soil and take the same grapes grown in Beta soil, and make wines from each using the same XYZ proportions, the same steps, you can get considerably different wines.
Winemakers know this fact, which is why they talk about the types of soil in which the grapes that they’ve used are grown — limestone, clay, shale, slate, sand, alluvial, granite, volcanic, and more — all make their mark.
Come visit this Friday’s tasting so that we can right our wine discussion omission. It’s another of our famous free, walk-up wine tastings. Please join us any time between 5:00 and 6:30 PM.
