Smartmouth Cowcatcher

Milk Stout

The name “Cowcatcher” for Smartmouth Brewing’s milk stout has deep roots. First of all, it’s a nod to the railroad tracks surrounding the beer’s Norfolk brewery. Secondly milk stouts are sweetened by lactose, a sugar that stays in the beer because yeasts can’t metabolize it. So, milk … cows. Here, the sweetness creates milk chocolate notes tempered by shades of spicy bitterness. Finally, the cowcatcher clears the track just as lactose gives this beer a silky mouthfeel, guaranteeing you always get a smooth ride. Sometimes, there’s a lot in a beer … and a name.
