The Scacciadiavoli (from scacciare – to banish, and diavoli – devils) winery takes its name from an exorcist that lived in a town at the borders of the property who used the local wine for his rituals. No, really!
The winery was founded in 1884 by Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi, who dreamt of it becoming an advanced and imposing oenological complex. In 1857, Amilcare Pambuffetti started work on the property as a 14 year-old farm hand. In 1954, at the age of 71, he bought the Scacciadiavoli holding. The winery is now in the hands of a third generation of the Pambuffetti family.
Grechetto is a full-bodied indigenous Umbrian varietal. Famous for being the grape of Orvieto, its resistance to late-season rot makes it a good grape for the region’s Vin Santo dessert wines. This dry iteration is one of our most flexible inexpensive Italian white wines, and is particularly great with seafood.
