We continue our (nearly) month-long run of Spanish wines with one of the friendliest Riojas we’ve had in recent memory.   Lar de Paula lies in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, a high-altitude sub-region of Spain’s most famous appellation. Protected to the North by the Sierra Cantabria mountains, and bounded to the South by the river Ebro, Fernando Meruelo and Félix Revuelta set up shop here with the goal of marrying the best of traditional practices with modern equipment, facilities and winemaking techniques. This single-varietal Tempranillo is from 20 to 30 year-old vines rooted in limestone and clay.  After a careful harvest, the juice is aged 6 months in French and American oak barrels, followed by another few months in bottle prior to release.
