Baltic Style Porter

Virginia is for Porter lovers.

Although Virginia stouts are definitely a thing, from the early days of the Craft Beer Explosion, for whatever reasons, you could find new VA craft breweries pushing out fine porters. Being porter lovers, we’re all for that. This week’s Beer of the Week, from Salem, VA, is one of our favorites.

Parkway Brewing Company’s Ravens Roost (named after a Skyline Drive overlook outside of Staunton) is one of those beers that fails at what it’s supposed to be but is great at what it is. It’s not a very successful Baltic Porter — it doesn’t have much sourness; it’s fermented with ale yeast, but it’s a great straight up porter.

Light to medium bodied, the Ravens Roost boasts a deft manipulation of malt and hops so that there’s roastiness there but not too much to ruffle your feathers. In fact the roast and the hops blend to give the illusion of smokiness that you’d expect from a London Style Porter. (Drink it cold, but not ice cold, to get the most of this effect.) There’s a shaker of sweetness overlooking the flavor profile letting chocolate notes come out, but nowhere near enough that you’d find the brew heavy. One of us called this brew the perfect beer as the weather gets colder. However, feel free to drink it all year round. We certainly do.

One should never be caught without reason.
