Wine in Nemea, in the Greek Peloponnese region, is saturated in myth. In addition to a recorded 3,500 years of winemaking, the legend says that the Agiorgitiko grapes are of such rich darkness because they were stained by the blood of the lion that Hercules slew. But Nemea is also known for white wines, and Moschofilero is the standard-bearer.
One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution, Gai’a Estate (pronounced Yay-ya) was established in 1994. The estate is named after “Mother Earth,” in honor of the unique terroir that gives birth to these world-class wines. The grapes for the Monograph Moschofilero come from vineyards located in the Arcadian plateaus. In this cool climate, the pink-skinned Moschofilero thrives, developing intense, spicy and floral aromatics and crisp acidity. Moschofilero is the rare white grape that smells of roses, while being structured and dry enough to compliment a wide range of foods. It excels with seafood, unsurprising for the dominant white wine of what is, essentially, one of Greece’s largest islands. A unique grape that will bring a lightness, and a classical tinge of the exotic to your day!
