Wine of the Week 7/21/20
Domaine des Cognettes Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Regularly $14.99/On Sale for $12.96
Domaine des Cognettes is a sixth-generation winery located just outside of the town of Clisson, in the Loire Valley. Brothers Stephane and Vincent Perraud started working in their family vineyards in 1988, converted all production to organic in 2009, and produced their first certified vintage in 2013.
Everything is hand-harvested and hand-sorted.
Native yeast fermentation happens in traditional, glass-lined fermenters that help to preserve freshness during the process.
While the Domaine is famous for their Muscadet, they make a number of terrific red wines as well as this fresh, delightful Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes were grown on land surrounding an old windmill, on a steep hill from which you can see the 13th-century Clisson castle, one of the strongholds of the then Duchy of Brittany.
The soft, humid weather and steady wind from the nearby (75 miles away) Atlantic makes this a gentler, rounder Sauvignon Blanc than the more famous Sauvignons from further down the Loire river. Supremely drinkable, but not one-dimensional, this is the perfect white wine for Central Virginia in July, so stock up!
70 miles from the Atlantic
The climate is Oceanic, with a soft and humid winter and the wind coming from the west off of the Atlantic.
