Wine of the Week 8/4/20
McPherson Cellars Piquepoul Blanc 2017
Regularly $17.99/On Sale for $13.96
Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson was a founder and pioneer of the modern Texan wine industry. He started the first (legal) winery in Texas since prohibition. His son Kim McPherson started Mcpherson Cellars in 2006 in a 1930s-era Coca Cola bottling plant in downtown Lubbock as a tribute to his father’s work, and to make some seriously excellent wines!
Kim grows grapes mostly associated with the Rhône and southern France. It’s not surprising he can get concentration in high-temperatured Texas, but what is surprising is the incredible finesse these wines have.
Piquepoul (or Picpoul) is associated with the French south-west, and is always one of the most sprightly and refreshing wines. It’s still that in McPherson’s wine, but it also has a depth we’ve never seen in a Piquepoul. A tremendous food wine, this is a bottle that should be on its side in your fridge, ready to grab when unexpected friends show up for a socially distant grilling party. This wine is a great deal!
