Hazy Double IPA

So as far as we’re concerned, you need two things to have a New England Style IPA. The IPA needs to be unfiltered (or “hazy”), and it needs to have hop and malt profiles that bring out tropical fruit notes (making it “juicy”). Hazy and juicy. You can have either without the other, but it’s both that gives us the latest “It: style. You can have an unfiltered IPA with piny or citrusy or grassy or spicy hops, and that would not be (to us) an NEIPA. Conversely, you could have an off-dry, filtered IPA with hops that deliver notes of oranges and passionfruit. That sure sounds juicy, but without to haze, no NEIPA craze. (Oh, yes. We are exactly those types of geeks to split such hairs!)

All this is to say, that when you think of Basic City hazy IPAs, you probably first and foremost think of their Double NEIPA, the Bask. (And having such freedom of thought why would you think of anything else?) However, you might overlook other hazy DIPAs sitting in Bask’s shadow, beers like the Golden Bough.

The Golden Bough is a dry, hazy IPA featuring Citra and Azzaca hops. Though Azacca hops are prized for their tropical fruit notes, here the Citra takes the steering wheel with its zesty flavors allowing the more piney and citrusy aspects of Azacca to provide depth. The haze gives the beer just enough roundness in the mouth to really fill out the experience. Now, you may think we’re being too particular in calling the Golden Bough a Double hazy IPA as opposed to an NEIPA. To that, we say you should chill out, have a beer, and not worry too much about what we worry too much about.
