Gai’a Agiorgitiko “Monograph”
Regularly $14.99 /On Sale for $11.96
Wine in Nemea, in the Greek Peloponnese region, is saturated in myth. In addition to a recorded 3,500 years of winemaking, the legend says that the Agiorgitiko grapes are of such rich darkness because they were stained by the blood of the lion that Hercules slew. One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution, Gai’a Estate (pronounced Yay-ya) was established in 1994 y Leon Karatsalos and winemaker Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. The estate is named after “Mother Earth,” in honor of the unique terroir that gives birth to these world-class wines. Yiannis pushes the boundaries of Greek winemaking by experimenting with wild yeast fermentation and alternative materials for wine aging, and reinventing the formulas for some of Greece’s most historic wine styles.
The name Agiorgitiko means literally "St. George's grape." St. George (of dragon fame) was of Greek parentage, and is much celebrated in the Orthodox church. There is a chapel of St. George in Nemea, not far from the vineyards.
The Gai’a “Monograph” wines are designed to be supremely friendly. Many of our customers enjoyed the Moschofilero white from the same line some months ago - if you missed that one, make sure you don’t miss this!
