Rocket Frog Wallops Island Brown

Regularly $12.99 / Now on Sale for $11.96
American Brown Ale

Years ago, in the midst of the bloom of craft brewing, we said that craft brewers fell into at least one of three archetypes — home brewers turning pro, lawyers or investment bankers looking for a second career, and lovable pot heads. Today, though, craft beer is an established thing. It’s a challenging but viable business venture. Thus the type of people who get into it are changing.

In 2018, brothers David and Richard Hartogs and David’s wife Jennifer Showell-Hartogs launched Rocket Frog Brewing Company in Sterling, VA. They weren’t brewers. They weren’t rich. (We don’t know what they smoke.) They just loved good craft beer and wanted to own a brewery that made it. They hired a head brewer, found a location, took inspiration from a frog caught in the shockwave of a NASA rocket launch, and opened up shop. Two years later, they’ve landed in our fair city.

The Wallops Island Brown (named after the island just south of Chincoteaque where said frog was blown away) is one of their few year-round offerings. It’s light-bodied with a malt bill that delivers caramel and toffee flavors. However, those flavors are transformed by citrusy and piney Pacific Northwest hops into burnt caramel and toasted toffee. Flaked oats also come in providing a smooth mouthfeel to the overall coffee-like experience. If you miss the almost vanished “Black IPA” style, this brew is the beer for you.

Rocket Frog Angry Angry Alice

Regularly $16.99 / Now on Sale for $14.96
Hazy Double IPA

The Hartogs profess to like all types of beer, but they also confess to be hop heads. So, it should be no surprise that they took their Angry Alice IPA and made an imperial version. Contrary to its name, the Angry Angry Alice has an appealing demeanor, as tropical fruit hops seamlessly give way to a piney finish. It’s a solidly balanced hop dynamic presented in a creamy, hazy package.
