Beer of the Week! 11/02/21

Denizens Big Red Norm

Regularly $12.99 / Now on Sale for $11.96
American Red Ale

With so many beers and so much brewing, there are some styles that aren’t able to break through the noise and stand out. The Red Ale is a fine example. Though it may be a foolish pursuit, we keep trying to introduce people to the joys of good red ales — case in point, the Big Red Norm from Denizens Brewing Company in Silver Spring, MD.

Named after a local Silver Spring figure, the Big Red Norm is uncommonly complex. Denizens manages to get a host of different flavors just from manipulating their malts and hops (which is impressive, ‘cause once you taste it, you’ll swear it’s been spiced somehow). The core malt flavor shifts back and forth between caramel notes, blackberry notes, and black currant depending on your palate. All of that Protean madness is cupped by bright hops that really sparkle on the finish. (Some of us tasted juniper; some of us tasted nutmeg.)

You want to get this beer cold but not ice cold to really get the balance right. And if it’s too cold right out of your fridge, you might try warming it up outside by your campfire or inside by your fireplace.

Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause … um … ‘cause … Oh, look! We just took a pause for the “ ‘cause.” ;D )

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Imperial Russian Style Stout

This may not be the beer that put Brooklyn Brewing Company on the map, but it’s the beer that makes it worth breaking the map out again every fall. The grandaddy of American versions of the Imperial Russian Stout, this beer was first brewed and named before craft brewers started brewing with actual chocolate. To this day, no actual chocolate is harmed in the making of the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, and it remains consistently delicious.

A bready coffee aroma greets the nose and then follows you into the glass bouncing right off of an almost cherry fruitiness. Silky smooth on the tongue, the whole thing wraps up in a char-like finish. How long has it been since you’ve had a Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout? Is it about time to go back to the Black?
