Spotlight on the Väsen Sól

Soured Saison Style Ale

We usually encounter the beers from Richmond’s Väsen Brewing Company through their excellent hazy IPAs. Every once in a while they slip a stout or a Gose our way. They, however, have an abiding love for barrel-aged sours.

To make their Sól, Väsen brewed a Saison style ale with THREE different strains of Brettanomyces yeast and dry-hopped the developing brew with Nelson Sauvin hops. Finally, they let it sit for a year in white oak American barrels.

It’s now almost a year after having been bottled, and the Sól has matured into a rich, complex brew. Väsen originally pitched this beer as a summer drink, but its swirl of sour, fruit, and spice notes works well for the holiday season.
